How Do You Know What Content To Create?

The internet is FULL of content ideas, and people selling you plans and classes and programs, and influencers who tell you how they went viral and if you comment some random word on their video they will message you the secrets of the universe.

While the basics of marketing are the same brand to brand and person to person, the heart of it can be very different!

Asking yourself these three questions can help get a starting point for the content that will best work for you and your social media goals:

  • Who is your content being made for?

And don’t say “women between the ages of 18 - 35.”  You can take a dozen different 25 year olds who are completely different people at very different places in their life and who have almost nothing else in common other than they are female and about 25 years old.

Who is the audience for your content?  What type of person do you want to connect with?  What type of person do you think will find this content relatable?  Or if you’re trying to connect with people in a way to share new ideas with them, what type of people are they and what do they find relatable?

  • How is your content relevant for them?

Sometimes you have to do a little bit more on the PR side to help people understand what you’re saying and why they should care.  That type of content is always a little harder than going in with people who already are a way.

But if, for example, you’re opening a new ice cream shop, and you’re focused on people who love ice cream, that’s pretty easy.  You just have to share why your ice cream is amazing and the different flavors you have and the types of cones and topping options.

You can narrow this down by defining who you’re talking to, and how it is relevant for them.

  • What do you want people to take away from your content?

Sometimes it is as simple as sharing that you opened a shop at 123 Main Street at the center of town, and you’re selling ice cream that costs x price and you have 12 different toppings and that’s it.

But do you want people to know that you also have healthy sugar-free options?  Maybe your ice cream is organic made from milk that was supplied by a local dairy farmer?  Maybe you have non-dairy options as well?  Maybe you want people to know that you’re the best priced, highest quality ice cream shop.  Maybe you want people to know how you have healthy toppings and people can come to you for a sweet treat while not breaking their diet.  Maybe you just want people to know that you’re fun or funny or your shop is a great place to work.

If someone went through your page, what would you want the take-away to be?

By isolating these three things, you can use it as a map to direct your future planning and content creation.  Then when you come across an idea or something that someone tells you to do for your content, compare it to your lists and now you have a starting point!
