Three Things To Help You Manage Your Social Media Account

Managing a social media account isn’t just posting something and you’re done.

Social media is SOCIAL - meaning there is an interchange of thoughts and ideas between people and not just the one-way communication of traditional media.

How do you engage and manage that, especially when the very design of every single social media platform is to suck you in and hold your attention for as long as possible so you lose track of time and the next thing you know 5 hours have gone by?

Three things which can help are:

  • Plan Your Content.

There are so many holidays and special days and local events and things relevant to your business which you can use as content ideas, but you can’t promote them or share them if you’re not thinking ahead and getting the content for them ready in advance.

Take at least one hour a month, and line up the content for the coming month. In January you’d line up February and plan your Valentine’s Day and other February-relevant content. In February you’d line up March, and so on.

The ideal minimum posting schedule is three times per week. This could be a photo or a graphic or a video, or one of each. There are lots of ways to optimize your account and streamline and focus on growing followers and going viral and hashtags and everything which is great!

But if where you’re at is post something or don’t post at all, post something.

After you have your plan, you can set a time to create the content, even if it means spending one day a month making content.

  • Schedule Your Posts.

Almost every single platform has a “schedule” feature where you can set the date and time you would like your posts to go live.

This means that you can have your content lined up (even if it is just a text post), loaded in, and set to post throughout the week or the month without needing to go in every day to post it.

Pick a day a month or an hour a week or whatever works for you and go in and schedule your posts for the month or for the week so that you don’t have to worry about posting the rest of the time and can just focus on your actual job of delivering your service or product to your clients and customers!

  • Set A Time, And Set A Timer.

Pick the time you’re going to be scrolling through social media. This could be to look for content ideas, check out trends, engage with your followers, or make sure comments and messages are answered on your account.

Comments and messages should be answered at least once per business day, but if you miss a day or three don’t beat yourself up (unless it is a lead or a sale or customer service question - those are really important to answer as quickly as possible).

Engaging with other people’s content (liking their posts, commenting on other’s posts, sharing other’s posts, sharing to your stories on platforms that have story options) should be done at least once a week, if not once a business day.

So, set a time that you will do this. It could be while you’re waiting for an appointment, or when you’re on your commute (if you’re not driving!), or just pick a window you can set aside.

Pick how long you can spend on it. This could be 15 minutes, could be 30 minutes, could be an hour. 15-30 minutes is usually enough, though if you have an hour one day and only 15 minutes the rest of the week that’s fine as well.

The most important part: set a timer once you start. After the timer goes off, you’re done. Don’t set another 5 minutes. Finish watching the reel or reading the post you’re on and then close the app!

Got caught up with other work and missed the time you set for your social media window? Pick a different time, set your timer, and go for it!

And as a bonus tip: When you’re done for the day or the week or the month, close the tab or close the app and don’t open it every time you get a notification (unless you’re able to spend that time like that).

Remember, like anything you can spend time or you can spend money.

Another option is always to hire someone to help with this. But until you’re able to work out that budget you can work out the time to build your business or brand up to a point where you can hire someone to do it for you.

When you first get started it might take a few hours to get going, but as you grow with it and get more familiar with everything it will go faster and faster and you’ll be able to do it more quickly!

*Note: It is not advised to use AI to generate images or create posts. This is for a long list of reasons ranging from the ethical and environmental reasons down to the simple math. Per Survey Monkey’s 2025 “State of Marketing” report, almost 50% of consumers surveyed outright refuse to purchase anything from a company using generative AI for their marketing, and over 70% think less of a business or brand who use generative AI.
