Easy Ideas To Start With For Content Creation And Marketing
The first step of content creation for any business or brand can sometimes be the most overwhelming. What should you even create for your content?
Thankfully, there is a really simple place to start. When sitting down to finally launch (or re-launch, or just pick up a bit) your content for marketing campaigns, social media platforms, and other forms of marketing-based outreach (beyond just directly copy-paste duplicating trends), start at the beginning: Who are you and what do you do?
WHO ARE YOU?
This could be as deep and meaningful or as surface-level as you like. You can focus on things like who you are as a person, or it could be a more broad scope of things such as what your company, brand, or business is and why it exists.
You can get super detailed and share things like your hopes and dreams and goals and likes and dislikes, or you can pick a part of you that fits with your brand goals and focus on that.
For example, if you’re a florist, why are you a florist? What do you love about flowers? What is your favorite flower? What types of orders do you love delivering? Are you a part of a big franchise or are you a small locally owned shop?
You can also just share fun facts about yourself such as your favorite coffee order, what you had (or didn’t have) for breakfast, your favorite color, or your favorite music.
Or you can share your training and qualifications and experience that makes you eligible to be a florist. Or you can share both!
These all help share who you are and make you more than “just another” but helps establish you as a relatable person who cares and who is going to do a professional job.
WHAT DO YOU DO?
This might seem very obvious, but you’d be surprised what people don’t know about your brand or what you offer. This can also be as detailed or as wide as you like.
If you’re a shoe store, what sizes and styles do you carry? Do you cater to people who have wide feet? Are your styles specific designers who have worked with podiatrists and ensure their designs are not just stylish but also support good foot placement and therefore proper spine health? What about your store offers something to consumers that they might not get somewhere else?
Are your services provided locally? Are your materials sourced from other small businesses or brands? Do you offer one thing or a range of things?
If you’re a Bookkeeper, do you also do CPA services and can you help file taxes? If you’re a restaurant do you offer catering? Are you allergy-friendly? If you’re a realtor do you do commercial and residential properties? Do you help buyers and sellers or just residential buyers?
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?
This could be any number of things, from the thoughts you have of “I just wish my clients understood…!” to logistical details like why it takes 3-5 days for delivery.
There are no right or wrong answers, it is just the answer that fits your business or brand.
Having these primary questions answered can help target the rest of your marketing choices by giving yourself a “story spine” to follow for all other content.
Here are some content topic ideas to showcase who you are and what you do:
Feature yourself and your team! It helps to see the people behind a business or brand. Feature photographs or videos of different people. Share who they are, what they do, and why they’re the best person for the job!
Share your history! How did the company or business or brand start? Why was it started? What inspires it to keep going?
What are your products? Feature the services or products you offer either by showing actual items, or sharing client testimonials. A commonly used marketing question is “what problem do you solve?” but that can be limited by customer understanding of their having a problem they need you to solve. “What do you offer and why?” can be a more direct approach to this.
What are your values? What matters to you? This doesn’t need to be hot button topics or politics, just the things that matter to your brand and that go into the decision making process of running your business and delivering your services.
Showcase your customer and client success! Repost positive reviews, create graphics to share positive feedback, ask clients if they’re comfortable leaving you a video review.
Keeping who you are and what you do at the base of your content creation can help keep it on-brand and on-message for you and your business, even when adapting trending content and other marketing trends to fit your business or brand.
